Sleeping baby gives car-thief second thoughts
MONTREAL - A car thief in Montreal alerted police of his misdeed after discovering a baby sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle, then fled, authorities said Tuesday.
The mother had left her 14-month old daughter asleep in the sports-utility vehicle with its engine running while she stopped to visit her sister Monday afternoon in the Montreal neighborhood of Outremont, said Constable Miguel Alston.
Moments later, a man jumped into the driver's seat and drove off, only to abandon the vehicle a few blocks away and call police from a pay phone.
Police located the sport utility vehicle with the little girl still asleep in her seat, he said.
A parent's depression hurts child's life
A parent struggling with stress or depression can lower a child’s quality of life and can hinder an overweight child trying to lose weight, a U.S. study said.
Lead author David Janicke of the University of Florida says tending to the needs of distressed parents can be one of the best ways to help children.
For example, having supportive parents is vital for children to be able to make the lifestyle changes needed to lose weight. Children often only have access to food at home and the behaviors a parent models affect the lifestyle choices a child makes, the researchers said.
Packing child's lunch doesn't need to be a nightmare
If you don't know what to put in your child's lunch box, look to the wide variety of lunch boxes out there for inspiration.
Insulated bags and boxes often come with separate compartments to keep food at different temperatures, and everything in its place. And there's plenty of room for individual tiny containers, so kids can have fun "making" their own food.
For example, in an insulated, multicompartment lunch box, pack a "make your own taco" kit, complete with lettuce, shredded cheese, meat and salsa your child can use to assemble a have-it-your-way healthy Mexican meal.
Of course, you'll need to make sure you're packing foods your child likes in the first place.
Let your children help select their lunch boxes. Many lunch box companies now sell models intended to be customized, either with craft supplies or professional monograming done when they are ordered.
New baby brings new life to birthday celebrations
I’ve always been a fan of my birthday. It’s probably one of my favorite days of the year. It’s not for another month and a half, but when I was a kid I would have already started the countdown—“Only 45 more days until my birthday!” I guess I like my birthday because it’s the day dedicated to me, it’s the anniversary of my birth.
The day you are born is a super special day, although most can’t really remember it. It’s the day that you became a part of your family and instantly turned into one of the most important people in their lives. It’s something most of us don’t really think about in those terms on that day. But being part of a birth of a close friend or family member is a really extraordinary experience. When someone you love brings a new life into the world by extension you love that brand new little life.
Itchy skin can signal serious problem in late pregnancy
Itchy skin is a fairly common problem during a woman's pregnancy. It's fairly mild for most women. But for others, it can develop into a severe skin irritation, and can even be fatal to the unborn child.
Mary and Rich Pokrywka will soon welcome a new son, Joseph. He'll be an early arrival because Mary suffered from intense itching that was localized to the bottoms of her feet and palms of her hands.
Mary couldn't find an explanation in her pregnancy book, but she feared the itching was serious.
Mary is right. Her condition is called obstetric cholestasis, a liver condition in which the normal flow of bile is impaired. Bile acid enters the bloodstream and causes itching, but that's not all.
Symptoms usually appear within the third trimester, and the easiest way to find it is with a blood test.
It's important to remember most itching is common during pregnancy. But if you have uncontrollable, localized itching, you may want to contact your doctor. Flounders
